Oh You're Such A SLUT!

Words are power.

In this day and age, we have a curse word for people of every race, gender, sexuality, etc. We use these words to harm and degrade, and they are given power when we fear those words.

To reclaim a slur is to devalue it. People take a word that has been used to mean something cruel, and they use it to celebrate the exact thing it mocks. (All of us have seen this in the use of the n-word by people of color, or with words like “queer” being used to describe the LGBTQ community.) As Dumbledore said it so very well, “Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself.”  The extended use of a word takes away its power because the mystery and the rarity behind it disappear. Using the word redefines the meaning and makes it useless, meaningless against us.

Women are shamed and degraded daily for our sexual choices. We are mocked if we are virgins and called prudes. We are mocked if we have sex outside of marriage and called sluts. Where men are praised for their sexual escapades and their many partners, women are ridiculed. Countless metaphors exist for why it’s ok for a male and not ok for a woman to be promiscuous. The word slut is a word that has, for ages, been used to shame promiscuous women. The word slut has been used against us to imply that our worth lies in our pants, and that that worth can disappear after only one night. (Magic?!) To use “slut” in a good, endearing way to compliment a woman on a sexual adventure is to take the cruelty and harm out of the word. It takes away its power to be unkind to someone, and to have a negative effect on someone, because no one will fear the word. They will embrace it and use it lovingly to suppose and uphold our fellow sisters as they live the choices they have chosen for themselves.

It's great to be a slut! It’s great to be a prude. It’s great to do literally whatever makes you feel good in life!  The thing that puts substance and meaning into your love life is only you. The first time can be as special as the tenth or the fiftieth. It can bring experience, it can bring love and adventure. The new “Slut” Collection aims to show us that we are beautiful, no matter what we do and who we do it with. We are strong and amazing; we’re smart and powerful. We live our lives and we help people, and our sex lives are a small, miniscule part of who we are. They don’t define us. We define us. Define yourself by your terms. And if being a slut makes you happy…. Be a slut!
